When the sun belched and the power grid failed, it was only nine meals until the end of the world.
Billy “Shep” Shepard always thought the apocalypse would come from an asteroid with a funny name, or a super bug, or a nuclear war, or even Yellowstone blowing its top. It came from none of those things. Instead it came from an angry sun in the form of the biggest Coronal Mass Ejection mankind had ever seen – and it slapped the human race back a century.
In these grim times, people kill for food, water and weapons. They scratch out a feeble existence after “The Ejection.” But not Shep. His biggest question each day in his underground bunker is “Cheese Ravioli, Beefaroni or SpaghettiOs?”
Shep soon discovers that nothing in this new world is guaranteed. He and Antigone, a girl he rescues, are forced to take a perilous journey across an unyielding landscape toward the one place rumored to be unsullied by the disaster. Along the way they must overcome hunger, disease, desperation and death while running from a man who wants nothing more than vengeance.

When a writer can open a book with the line: "Cheese Ravioli, Beefaroni, or SpaghettiOs?" you know you have got a winner on your hands. After a Coronal Mass Ejection hits Earth, humanity is in for a very bad time. In Mike Kilroy's 'Nine Meals', we get to come along on a journey through a post-apocalyptic Earth where the main character's cuisine choice is an interesting metaphor. The book has a unique and humorous take on the end of the world as we know it for sure. It is dystopian or speculative fiction with a humorous slant. The humor and writing is reminiscent of the best of Douglas Adams, Christopher Moore, and some of Asimov's funnier moments in the Foundation Books.Nine Meals is at its heart a journey story with something special going on beneath the surface. While the plot is definitely engaging, the best part of th e book for me were the characters. The book has thoughtful moments that sneak up on you and the plot is multifaceted and layered. I enjoyed the the way the author organized the book by breaking out the flashbacks in a way that did not confuse me. Getting back-story into a book can kill it, but Kilroy does a phenomenal job of seamlessly weaving essential back-story in.
As I noted previously, the characters are what set this book apart from other dystopian novels I have read. None of the characters are cookie-cutter and the world they inhabit becomes a character itself. When the book opens, "Shep" Shepard, is living pretty well in a bunker in a post-apocalyptic world when he rescues Antigone "Tig". She is an unlikely companion for Shep, and convinces him to help her undertake a perilous journey to a "paradise" to try and reunite with her brother. While the journey would be hazardous in any case, no post apocalyptic journey is complete without a madman who is out for revenge. In addition to the major characters who are finely drawn, numerous minor characters are developed well and add a lot to the story. I found myself identifying with the characters and it was easy to visualize myself as being there with them and pondering how I would have handled a similar situation. The dialogue between characters is priceless.
I started reading the book with no real expectations but found myself caught up in the story. By the book's middle, a place that often bogs down in books, I was completely sucked in. While the story is delivered in present time the flashbacks fill in the gaps and provide the reader with all the information they need. As I mentioned, using flashbacks is not easy to pull off. I would plan to read for a few minutes and found myself repeatedly stealing more reading time because I wanted to see what was going to happen next.
The bottom line: If you are a fan of post-apocalyptic stories with great characters you will love this book. I never lost interest in the story and wanted it to keep going. There were twists and surprises that I just did not see coming and I loved that aspect of the book. Highly recommended and I am looking forward to reading more of Mike Kilroy's work in the future. I am now officially a fan.

Nine Meals edition by Mike Kilroy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Do you love an intelligent tale about loss, survival, and the human spirit?
Nine Meals has got IT. A rich plot. Deeply developed characters you want to both hug and hide from (the apocalyptic setting is a character unto itself, no doubt). Dialogue to die for and narrative so evocative you don't dare skip a word. I gush every once in a while and I can't help it here. See if you can hang with me while I let it all out.
The only thing I don't love is the cover---this would be a best seller with something more creative. Please don't let the package fool you about what's inside!
Shep is a broken, 40something former journalist who, in the aftermath of the Ejection, wrestles daily with old demons in his new hell of an existence. He meets an unlikely companion who inspires him to contemplate stepping out of the ring, if only he could. Tig is a spunky teenage girl who lost her parents and is now on her own. She's on a journey to a mythical paradise hundreds of miles away to reunite with the brother she thinks is there waiting for her. Bray is a former detective with a grudge and the only thing he's living for is revenge. There are over a dozen minor characters in big roles along the way and each are as equally developed as the main players.
About 25% in there's a great twist which catapults our characters forward and from that moment on I found it impossible to put down. The story is told in present time but there are several chapters throughout where it jumps back to a relevant moment of the past. I thought this was a priceless move on the author's part because it wove back story so seamlessly into the storyline, it didn't cause so much as a hiccup in pacing. Genius.
I wish gave out turbo tokens to boost the stars, I'd use one here. Anyone who loves smart apocalyptic fiction will be in their glory with Nine Meals. Well done!
